SPACE CAMP
Space Training for All!
Our two sponsored Space Camp winners, Jayden and Jackson, got to train just like NASA astronauts when they went to the Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students (SCIVIS). Every day was a new exciting mission to complete and challenge to overcome. They worked together in teams and relied on each other to finish their skill training each day and came back with new skills and new friends!
See more of their exciting journey on our website at www.eschenbach.com/about-us/giving-back.

AWARENESS MONTH
January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month!
The best way for you to detect glaucoma is through comprehensive dilated eye exams. While there is no cure for glaucoma, and often no early symptoms, early diagnosis and treatment can help protect vision and prevent further damage. Visit the National Eye Institute website to explore ways to support National Glaucoma Awareness Month and educate your patients about this important issue.
For your patients already living with glaucoma, Eschenbach offers a range of low vision aids designed to enhance their independence, safety and overall quality of life. For example, a number of our lower powered monocular telescopes can be used in reverse to expand a patient’s field of view which is often reduced due to glaucoma.

TIPS FROM TOM!
A request I sometimes get from patients (or a family member) is about wanting one optical magnifier that lets them see both a whole magazine or newspaper page and magnified images of words from the page large enough so they can read them. To help them understand how that is not possible due to the principles of optics, an analogy to a sporting event sometimes helps. If one goes to a football, baseball or soccer game and they want to see the players better, they can use an 8x pair of binoculars to see them—but then they would not be able to see the entire field. They can’t see both the entire field and a magnified image of the players looking through that binocular.
The same is true with optical magnifiers where they can either see the entire page without a magnifier (or a very low powered one) or see magnified words large enough to read with a magnifier. Sometimes this analogy helps patients and their families better understand the issue and allows for the exam to quickly move on without delay.
