EYECARE AWARENESS
August is National Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month!
Children are susceptible to a variety of vision and eye problems such as injury, infection and increased nearsightedness. In support of Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology provides information on how to treat children’s vision issues so that you can protect and preserve the eye health of your young patients.
For those professionals, like Teachers of the Visually Impaired, who see school-aged kids who have already been diagnosed with an eye disease causing irreversible vision loss, we have a Portable School Kit which contains an assortment of high quality optical vision aids for both near and distance tasks. The kit contains 52 items including hand-held magnifiers, stand magnifiers, telescopes and vision charts to help meet the needs of a broad range of students.

TIPS FROM TOM!
Staying On Track
I think most would agree that in the low vision clinic multiple visual goals will require multiple low vision aids. Unfortunately, at the conclusion of the exam, presenting multiple low vision aids can become confusing and time consuming. We’ve developed a system that helps us reduce this confusion.
We have a short telephone interview prior to the exam. Patients are asked to come up with specific visual goals they would like to accomplish. When the patient is in the pre-testing area, each visual goal is written on a separate 3x5 card and placed in the exam room. I have the patient prioritize these goals and they are laid out on the exam room counter in order of priority. When we determine which low vision aid best helps with that specific goal, we place the device on the 3x5 card and then go on to the “second” priority and so on.
At the end of the exam, we have specific low vision aids laid out in order of priority. I can then easily show how each low vision aid will help with specific visual goals. An additional benefit is that it has reduced the tendency of patients to jump from one goal to another before we’ve solved the initial problem.
Try it and let us know how it works for you!
