GLAUCOMA AWARENESS MONTH

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month!

Because there are no early symptoms, the only way for your patients to find out if they have glaucoma is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam. There’s no cure for glaucoma, but early treatment can often stop the damage and protect vision. Visit the National Eye Institute website to learn more about how you can support National Glaucoma Awareness Month and spread the word about this disease to your patients.

For your patients who may already be diagnosed with glaucoma, remember that Eschenbach carries a number of low vision aids that can increase their independence, safety and quality of life. Last year, Eschenbach sponsored two visually impaired students, Joey P. and Samuel F., to attend the SCIVIS Space Camp 2022 at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. Both of our sponsored students came back from this experience with excitement and life-changing memories.

Due to the impact the space camp has on visually impaired students, Eschenbach is pleased to announce that it has decided to again sponsor two students in 2023. Information about the Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students can be found at www.scivis.org.

Remembering Gwen Sterns, MD
Gwen Sterns, MD, a prominent low vision ophthalmologist, passed away on January 1, 2023 and will be remembered fondly by many. She had a passion for low vision and became internationally known in the field due to the numerous presentations she gave and articles she wrote on the subject. She was Rochester General Hospital's Chief of Ophthalmology for 20 years and served for 40 years as the medical director of Rochester's Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. She was also on the Scientific Advisory Committee for Prevent Blindness and was active for many years with the American Academy of Ophthalmology where she received its Secretariat award for lifetime achievement.
